Martumili App Launches this NAIDOC Week

This NAIDOC week, we are proud to publicly launch the Martumili App – a bespoke mobile-based app designed and developed by Specialist Apps, to enhance the gallery experience for customers near and far.

Integrating seamlessly with the Shire of East Pilbara’s existing Pilbara East App, the Martumili App takes users on a journey from our studio headquarters, around East Newman, and beyond – demonstrating the reach and prominence of Martumili Artists in the visual arts sector. Whether you’re a local community member wanting to keep up to date with upcoming activities or are located abroad and wish to deepen your understanding of Martumili and its member Artists, the Martumili App is a user-friendly platform to help you stay in the know.

In recognition of the NAIDOC 2025, theme of ‘Strength, Vision & Legacy’, this project is a celebration of Martu excellence across generations. The Martumili App makes the contemporary artistic contributions of Martu more accessible with the changing technology, placing Martu storytelling at the forefront of the Art Centre’s mission to connect with new audiences while advocating for best practice.

Download the Martumili App from your device’s chosen app store, and try it for yourself!

Martumili Story
Established in 2006, Martumili Artists is a thriving Aboriginal Art Centre, showcasing the contemporary practice of Martu artists in our built-for-purpose studio and gallery space in Newman. Working with artists across the communities of Parnpajinya, Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu, Kunwarritji, Irrungadji, and Warralong, the Martumili App centralises the people who make up the Art Centre and makes transparent its commitment to operate as a community project for Martu. It’s never been easier to learn about what Martumili does or show artists your support of authentic art and best practices – jump on the Martumili App today!

Exhibitions & Events
With the Martumili App, you can now stay up to date with our latest exhibition happenings, right in your pocket! Simply navigate to the ‘Exhibitions & Events’ page in the app, to learn about our upcoming shows in Newman and beyond, with the option to ‘favourite’ any that you simply can’t miss out on!

Mural & Art Trail
While the surest way of experiencing the beauty of Martumili artworks is at our gallery in Newman, a walk through the local town will reveal just how influential our artists have been in shaping the public realm. The Mural & Art Trail component of the app maps the geo-locations of key public art projects within the town of Newman, with contextual information about the artists involved, the stories behind the paintings, and high-quality photographs of the work.

In September 2024, the Shire of East Pilbara welcomed to their collection of public artworks Kun Kun (Kuny-Kuny), adapting artist Marlene Anderson’s painting to a ground-based mural in Newman’s Miner’s Promise Park. In some years earlier, Martumili with Newman Futures also facilitated the East Newman Art Trail – showcasing 30 local and emerging artists on the 14 BHP substations around East Newman.

Both these projects remain critical in Martumili’s commitment to the creative and professional development of Martu artists, and can be experienced online or in-person, with the accompaniment of the Martumili App!

Play & Explore
Martumili is a prime tourism destination, whether it be for customers passing through on holidays or for long-term returning fans. Now with the Martumili App gaming feature, it’s possible to transform the gallery into an interactive virtual reality quest, as players roam the space searching for desert animals that feature in many Martu artworks. Desert Dash is user friendly to even our youngest of gallery patrons and makes visiting Martumili all the more engaging!

The Martumili App was made possible with the State Government’s Regional Economic Development Grants Program, delivered by the Pilbara Development Commission and supported by the Shire of East Pilbara.
