“I painted burnt county. After burning, new plants will grow, like bush tucker. With KJ [Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa], school and Martumili, we went camping out. Kids was happy, some of them swimming too. Looking for mulyamiji (Desert Skink), finding there ngurra (home). I work with them ranger mob, they go out and look for night parrots too.”

– Glen Burton

Glen refers to Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ) ranger programs in Punmu, which work towards building strong and sustainable communities. Guided by three complementary objectives, KJ is; committed to supporting Martu in preserving their culture and Country; building a viable economy within Martu communities and; building pathways for young Martu toward a healthy future. The vast majority of Martumili Artists are also involved with a range of KJ’s extensive programs. During the field season, over 300 Martu individuals are actively engaged in on-Country activities, which encompass cultural learning, the fulfillment of cultural obligations, and the profound connection with Country that is intrinsic to Martu life.
